What is gum recession?
Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gumline. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth.
Why should gum recession be taken seriously?
When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.
What is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST®)?
The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST® is incision and suture free.
All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique ® were created by Dr. John Chao, who personally taught Dr. Diez.
How does the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST®) differ from traditional gum grafting?
Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gumline. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed.Pinhole Gum Surgery in Tampa, FL
While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique®.
How is Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST®) performed?
During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique®, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure.
There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique ®. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.
What are the benefits of Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST®)?
The benefits of the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique® are many:
Less discomfort for the patient after treatment
Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting
No need for uncomfortable sutures
No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools
No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate
Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results

What Is Pinhole Gum Surgery?
The pinhole surgical technique is one of the latest innovations in gum recession treatment. It’s comparable to a laparoscopic procedure since it requires only a small hole where the dentist inserts a specially designed dental instrument. Thanks to this surgical procedure, patients can enjoy many benefits like a quicker recovery period with minimal post-operative symptoms and excellent cosmetic results.
Gum Recession and Gum Disease
Why do we need to fix the gum line in the first place? Gum tissue serves a special function for your overall oral health. It protects the softer parts of the teeth from exposure to sugars, bacteria, and acids. In older adults, the gums may start to recede and root coverage is lost. However, even teenagers can develop this condition. Their teeth start looking longer and their gums stop much closer to the jaw.
When the softer parts of the teeth are exposed, they become more vulnerable to oral diseases. People can start developing cavities, experience sensitivity to cold and hot foods, and suffer a host of other issues. Treating gum recession is one way to prevent such problems from developing. In addition, the treatment makes the mouth look more aesthetically pleasing. You can have a more confident smile after the minimally invasive treatment.
Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST)
The more common method to correct gum recession is the traditional gum grafting technique. This involves taking soft tissue grafts or connective tissue grafts from the upper palate of the mouth and transferring them to the affected jaw, right underneath the receding gums. The procedure can be rather invasive and requires a long healing time.
The pinhole surgical technique offered at General & Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa is much more gentle and heals faster. We only need to make a pin-sized hole where we can insert our instrument, which we then use to gently pull down the gums back to the original gum line. No cutting, grafts, or stitches are required.
Benefits of Pinhole Gum Surgery With General & Cosmetic Dentistry of Tampa
Our dentists have plenty of experience restoring gum lines with pinhole gum surgery. Here are some benefits of getting the procedure:
Minimally Invasive Procedure
Unlike traditional gum grafting, the pinhole surgical technique doesn’t involve cutting the tissue and making large incisions. Not only are traditional methods more painful, but they can take a long time to heal and are more prone to infection. Instead, only a small hole is needed for the entire treatment.
Minimal Post-Operative Symptoms
With the minimally invasive technique, you can also avoid common post-surgery symptoms like infections and hemorrhage. The body will have an easier time repairing the damaged tissues since there is only a small area that needs to heal.
No Tissue Grafting
In a traditional or connective tissue graft, donor tissue is taken from the palate of the mouth. Not only is this technique more complicated, but it also adds another wound site that could potentially develop complications. Pinhole gum surgery does not involve any of this, further reducing the chances of infection or trauma.
Instant Cosmetic Results
Immediately after our procedure, you will see significant improvements in your gum line. You won’t need to feel self-conscious or uncomfortable with stitches as with traditional gum grafting.
Quick Recovery Process
Pinhole surgery takes only a few days to heal. In the best conditions, you can resume regular eating activities overnight. No need to wait days or weeks for the wounds to close.
