What Are CEREC Crowns?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It’s an innovative dental procedure that allows us to design and mill your dental crown right in our dental office. Usually, a traditional crown requires weeks to have your case sent to a dental lab, have the lab create a ceramic crown, and then have it shipped back to your dentist. With a CEREC crown, there is no sending out and no waiting!

CEREC crowns are made of high-quality ceramic material that closely resembles the natural color of your surrounding teeth. They’re strong and durable enough to protect your tooth from further damage.

A CEREC crown also does not have a metal core, making it look like a natural tooth. That means you can get a natural-looking smile and no one would know that you had any work done.

CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

Dental crowns are used for various purposes, including temporary or permanent restoration of a damaged tooth and protection of weak or broken teeth.

There are two main types of dental crowns: traditional crowns and CEREC crowns. Here’s a quick overview of the differences between these two types of crowns:

CEREC Crown

As mentioned above, CEREC dental crowns use esthetic ceramic that closely resembles the appearance of natural teeth. The most significant advantage of CEREC crowns is that they can be made in just a single appointment at the dentist’s office.

Traditional Crown

Traditional dental crowns are a tried-and-true method for restoring damaged teeth. They’re made of porcelain, metal, gold, or porcelain fused to metal. The process of producing a traditional crown could take several weeks to complete. The long waiting period requires you to use temporary crowns and risk further damage.

Additionally, traditional crowns require multiple appointments with your dentist. The first appointment might be for root canal therapy, then you’ll need an appointment to have the tooth prepared and a digital impression made, and then yet another appointment is scheduled once the permanent crown arrives back from the lab.

On top of all that, a traditional crown may not match the color of your teeth as closely as a CEREC crown since it’s challenging to get an exact color match with porcelain.

Which Dental Crowns Are Perfect for You?

Both traditional and CEREC crowns are produced with high-quality materials that protect your real tooth and can give you a natural-looking smile. The best option for you will ultimately depend on your personal preferences, needs, dental insurance, and the time you’re willing to wait for the procedure.

Traditional crowns are made in a dental laboratory and usually take multiple visits to complete. Traditional crowns may be your better option if you are on a budget, and don’t mind wearing a temporary crown and waiting a few weeks.

CEREC crowns are created in-office and can usually be completed in just one visit. They may be a little more expensive than traditional crowns, but they look more natural. If you’re looking for a fast and convenient solution, CEREC crowns are the way to go.

No matter which type of crown you choose, you can rest assured that the team at General & Cosmetic Dentistry will fix your teeth and help you achieve a natural-looking smile!
